Dr. Hamza Jakada

Dr. Jakada is a versatile and passionate researcher with a broad knowledge base in Environmental Science, Water Resources, GIS/Remote Sensing, Policy and Governance. He is an alumnus of China University of Geosciences (CUG) where graduated with a Master of Engineering Degree in Environmental Engineering and a Doctorate Degree in Hydraulic Engineering. While at CUG, he was awarded with the prestigious Excellent Student Award for outstanding academic and extra-curricular performances. Dr. Jakada actively participated in the 1:50000 scale geological survey of Xingshan Karst River Basin around the Three Gorges Dam of China, a project that was commissioned by the China Geological Survey (CGS). During this period, Jakada carried out several water resources projects including Watershed Characterization, Groundwater Vulnerability Assessment, Evaluating Surface and Underground flooding Phenomena in the Xingshang River Basin.

Dr. Jakada has presented academic papers and posters at several conferences in several countries including Turkey, United States of America and People’s Republic of China. Furthermore, he has published over 20 SCI papers with top ranking publishers including American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Springer and Elsevier. Dr. Jakada is also a recipient of the Microsoft Certificate of Excellence, a certified Java Developer. In addition, he has taken certified short courses with United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in America as well as University of Twente (Netherland) to mention a few.

His working experience started as an intern Surveyor at D&B Construction Company in 2006. In 2009 he joined the faculty of APTECH Computer Education and taught computer programming in C, Java and HTML. He later joined the Nigerian Civil Service where he served for over 7 years as an Environmental Scientist involved in oil spill clean-up, remediation as well as conducting oil spill drill exercises, auditing and activating oil spill contingency plans for several oil companies including Chevron, Agip (NAOC), Rahmaniyya etc. In 2017, he started lecturing at Baze University\u2019s Civil Engineering Department where he served as the pioneer Head of Department. At Baze, he founded the Baze University Water and Environment Research Center (BUWERC) for advanced studies in water and environmental issues.

At GHI, Dr. Jakada leads the SDG 6 program which aims at providing WASH services to vulnerable communities in Nigeria. This program has impacted about 100 communities comprising more than 50,000 people across Nigeria.
