GHI utilises technology, innovation, sustainability and partnerships to achieve sustainable goals. Delivery methods include acting as an implementing partner of donor agencies, providing consulting services in areas of expertise, and carrying out research and development, making GHI a think-tank towards delivering innovative solutions to complex and often challenging problems. GHI also executes advocacy programs aimed at positively shaping mindsets and practices that hamper communities’ and cities’ physical and economic well-being.
Purpose of position:
The consultant will work as GHI’s acting Communications and Marketing Officer to help tell the story of GHI. This means advancing our advocacy mission to spread good ideas and innovative ways of working in the public sector and helping our collaborators and clients understand what makes GHI unique. The Officer will work to “connect the dots” between our communications and marketing outreach, business development efforts, and advocacy mission.
This Communications and Marketing Officer will help develop and execute GHI’s communications and marketing strategy, including creating original content, communications design, conducting press outreach, planning and attending events, and handling all social media, and will contribute to our business development efforts through tracking ongoing opportunities and proposal writing.
This is a full-time consultant position based at our office in Wuse 2, Abuja, with an initial period of February 2023, to May 2023. Given exemplary performance and mutual alignment over this initial period, this could become a full-time staff position with growth potential.
Responsibilities:
– Strategic Communications and Advocacy
Contribute to editorial strategy, generate ideas, and support the creation of articles and blogs through background research, writing, and copy edits. Manage production of our monthly newsletter and draft news items.
Shape GHI’s digital strategy development and manage GHI’s social media presence through snappy daily updates.
Coordinate outreach to journalists, academics, practitioners, policymakers, and other thought leaders to share our work with new audiences.
Scour the web for relevant articles, reports, academic publications, and events to share with the GHI team and our social media networks.
Monitor analytics from our website, newsletter, and social media. Create reports analysing reader engagement and strategic recommendations based on analysis.
Copy edit programs deliverables (reports, presentations) and proposals.
– Business Development
Take part in early-stage business development, helping the team assess upcoming formal and informal opportunities to uncover and develop new relationships and business leads.
Support proposal development and the business development team to turn GHI’s approach and philosophy into impactful projects through research, writing, formatting, and copy editing.
Support relationship and partnership development, helping to identify and assess new potential partners and conduct early engagement.
Participate in the ongoing development of GHI’s organisational strategy through team working sessions and by conducting industry research to identify potential opportunities or areas of growth.
– Events
Evaluate speaking requests and hunt for new events for GHI to attend, assess the value of potential events for internal decision-making, and develop ideas and pitches for potential speaking opportunities.
Represent GHI at events and manage GHI’s event participation by liaising with coordinators on logistics and supporting team members in preparing talks and outreach.
Contribute to the strategy and design of GHI’s in-house events.
– Knowledge Management & Organisational Innovation
Contribute to process innovation within GHI to improve organisational agility, efficiency, and impact.
Ensure lessons from industry best practices and client engagements are effectively integrated across GHI’s work.
Requirements & Skills:
At least three (3) years of professional experience, including leading a growing organisation’s communications, marketing, social media and public relations activities.
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred in communications and marketing-related fields (e.g. marketing, business administration, management, advertising, journalism, and/or communications).
Demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in successfully developing and implementing campaigns, communications and public relations activities.
Strong creative, strategic, analytical, organisational and personal skills, with experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.
Experience overseeing the design and production of online and print collateral and publications.
Excellent writing and editing skills.
Experience developing and implementing successful social media strategies.
Proven track record in developing a broad spectrum of proactive media relations campaigns and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences.
Computer literacy in Google Suites and Microsoft Office required – Canva and Adobe Design Suite experience preferred.
Commitment to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Excellent people skills, with experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team.
Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities, proposing new ways of creating efficiencies, and guiding investment in people and systems.
Flexible and a self-starter; able to manage multiple concurrent projects while being highly detail-oriented and attentive to quality.
